How does digital radio work? Great sound and regional tuning Data services Background to digital radio Coverage Buy Digital radios at Dixons What is digital radio? Digital Radio is like analogue radio but even better. It offers superb sound quality, more stations, ease of tuning, interference-free reception plus data and text services. All stations can provide scrolling text and many include song titles, artists, presenter names, news, weather, phone numbers, websites and more. The data services are still in the pilot stages of development but each operator has 20% of their capacity reserved for data. How does digital radio work? Two digital technologies are combined to produce digital radio. MPEG technology is an audio compression system that reduces the massive quantity of digital information that is broadcast. This is done through discarding sounds that the listener will not hear - for example frequencies out of human hearing range. COFDM (Coded Orthognal Frequency Division Multiplex) is the technology that ensures signals are received reliably and robustly, even in those environments that usually suffer from interference. This is done by splitting the digital data signal across 1536 different carrier frequencies and also across time. By using this process it ensures that even if some of the frequencies are affected by interference the receiver can still recover the original sound. Great sound and regional tuning COFDM technology (Coded Orthognal Frequency Division Multiplex) means interference caused by signals bouncing off buildings and hills as with FM frequencies is no longer. It also means that the same frequency can be used across the country, so no re-tuning is needed. If you already receive a good FM signal the sound differences may not be too apparent. However with a digital radio you have access to new radio stations and additional services only available with digital broadcasting. Data services Digital Radio also supports the transmission of data across the airwaves. Many providers have text messages that inform listeners about the programmes and related information such as artist and song title. Data services such as the broadcasting of web pages, travel information, programme guides and games are also possible. At present many of these data services are still in the pilot stages. For example BBC Travel are looking at a service using TPEG technology that will revolutionise traffic information services. TPEG is a personal travel service that will sift through all the travel information broadcast by the BBC and only give you the traffic news that affects the area you are in. Background to digital radio Digital Radio was developed by a consortium of 12 partners, known as EUEKA-147. The system was originally called Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). In 1994, EUEKA-147 was adopted as a world standard. Not every country has adopted this system; the USA has chosen a different standard. Digital Radio began transmission in September 1995 pioneered by the BBC. Digital One, the UK’s commercial radio multiplex began broadcasting in November 1999. In recent years we have seen the number of digital radio stations increase through both the BBC and Digital One. Coverage BBC national digital radio covers approximately 65% of the UK population including most major towns and cities. The BBC aim to increase this coverage to 80% by the end of 2004 and 85% in early 2004. Digital One currently covers 80% of the UK population with its services and aim to increase this to 85%.
