The RE-28FZ10PX's pictures are disappointing. Since it's such a key boast of this TV, let's look first at the 100Hz processing. The pictures do look a fraction more stable than on 50Hz TVs - but the difference is negligible. Studio news programmes can look very nice provided there's not too much movement going on, but other types of footage, particularly sport, look noisy and artificial. Another serious problem is a faint but clearly visible vertical band down the picture just to the right of centre. Some patchy colour containment, meanwhile, causes seepage from bright channel logos and contributes to a general lack of definition. A halo can also be clearly seen around almost any sharp edges and we're perturbed by the way the picture sometimes jumps in brightness for no apparent reason. Audio performance is fairly good. Dialogue stays clear and fairly rich during rampant action scenes, and the soundstage is wide, with good dispersal of effects. There's a decent amount of bass too, though the sound level doesn't really open up during big movie moments. Connections comprise the usual two Scarts, one of which can handle RGB signals, stereo audio inputs and a full set of front (actually down the side) inputs. The instruction manual is appalling and the onscreen menus are clumsily structured, with a confusing navigation system and some odd phraseology. Features are surprisingly numerous. There's the 100Hz capability and a twin-tuner picture-in-picture system so that you can watch two analogue broadcasts simultaneously plus the more common option of watching one broadcast channel and one of the AV inputs. Other fancy stuff includes a Degauss facility for clearing up any colour problems caused by magnetic interference from, say, neighbouring speakers; a noise reduction system; a child lock; and auto volume correction to balance out the differences between channels. On paper the RE-28FZ10PX looks like a real hotshot, but in the harsh reality of our test labs it serves as another abject lesson that sometimes good old 50Hz can still be best.
