To record or play back chrome or metal tape your deck must have a CR/MTL switch, (or automatic adjustment), for proper sound quality. Once you have a good tape choice you'll need to decide on what type of Dolby® Noise Reduction* you'll need. Dolby NR is credited with making the cassette tape a hi-fidelity source in that it substantially reduces the hiss and noise found on all magnetic tapes. The first Dolby NR to be introduced was Dolby B which cuts the hiss by 50%. Most pre-recorded tapes are made using Dolby B. Dolby C was introduced a few years later and it cuts the hiss in half again... a total 75% reduction. If you are making tapes for your portable or car stereo, then you'll want to choose a Dolby version that is compatible with them. If they don't have any Dolby NR then Dolby B is usually a good choice. Another type of Dolby is Dolby HX PRO which is not noise reduction at all.
