Basics Features Technology Glossary The cassette deck has been around as long as most of us can remember and making tapes for our cars, boomboxes and personal portables remains a popular pastime. Component cassette decks range in price from under $100 to $400 for mainstream products and there are great differences in the functions and recording quality between these price extremes. A good recording starts with a good source (tape, CD, LP etc.) and a good blank tape. Tape comes in 3 different types... Normal - Normal tape is inexpensive and generally suitable for non-hi-fi recording for portables and dictation / notes. Chrome - (stands for Chromium Dioxide), is the most popular tape in use as you can get excellent results at a reasonable price for most music applications. Metal - Metal tape was introduced about the same time as the CD and is specifically designed to capture the energy and the high notes from well recorded CD's to make studio quality recordings. Metal tape is more expensive but is the tape of choice for the highest fidelity recordings AND for recordings that last longer before having signal loss. To record or play back chrome or metal tape your deck must have a CR/MTL switch, (or automatic adjustment), for proper sound quality. Once you have a good tape choice you'll need to decide on what type of Dolby® Noise Reduction* you'll need. Dolby NR is credited with making the cassette tape a hi-fidelity source in that it substantially reduces the hiss and noise found on all magnetic tapes. The first Dolby NR to be introduced was Dolby B which cuts the hiss by 50%. Most pre-recorded tapes are made using Dolby B. Dolby C was introduced a few years later and it cuts the hiss in half again... a total 75% reduction. If you are making tapes for your portable or car stereo, then you'll want to choose a Dolby version that is compatible with them. If they don't have any Dolby NR then Dolby B is usually a good choice. Another type of Dolby is Dolby HX PRO which is not noise reduction at all. It is a system for allowing more high notes to be recorded on a tape without distortion and is compatible with ALL kinds of decks upon playback. *Dolby, Dolby B, Dolby C, Dolby S, Dolby NR and Dolby HX Pro are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories Inc. If our store price is lower on the day you pick up your purchase, we will automatically adjust your purchase price to match the lower price. We cannot ship items outside of the USA due to manufacturer agreements.
