Basics Home Delivery Features Slimline Projection Basics Connectivity Convenience Home Theater Installation Screen Protectors HDTV Basics HDTV Glossary HDTV FAQ HDTV Technical Details Sound Glossary So you're looking for a little relief from constantly squinting to see the picture on your itsy bitsy TV? Not to worry. We have the prefect prescription: a projection TV. We'll supply you with all the information you'll need to select the rear projection TV that's right for you. Projection TVs are now more affordable than ever, and the number of convenient new features continues to grow. When shopping for a television, the first thing you'll want to find out-before brand, before features, even before price-is what size you need. There are some simple formulas that can help you choose the right TV based on the quality of the signal or "source" you'll be using and your distance from the screen. The clearer the source, the larger the TV set you should consider for a given distance from the screen. Simply put, the better the quality the source, the bigger TV you can have and still get great results. It's easy to underestimate the difference upgrading to a projection TV can make in your home. Because TVs are measured diagonally, from corner to corner, a 40" projection TV offers way more than 2 times the viewing area (it's 119 percent bigger, actually) of a 27" set. A 60" set boasts a viewing area 4 times bigger than a 27" set! Helpful tip: A TV's model number almost always indicates the size of the TV screen. Example: HIT43FDX10B = 43-inch screen. Pretty cool, huh? A Look Behind Rear Projection TVs All the projection sets we sell are rear projection sets, which means the projection cathode ray tubes, commonly known as CRTs, are found within the set and behind a plastic projection screen. The light from the CRTs strikes a mirror and is reflected onto the rear of the screen, where it forms an image you can see on the other side. Instead of the traditional direct view TVs you're used to, where you view the picture directly on a single tube, rear projection TVs use CRTs, a series of focusing lenses, a mirror, and a display screen. Each tube provides one of the 3 primary colors of television-red, green, or blue-and their signals are reflected off a mirror and onto the back of a complex screen "sandwich." Since the picture in a traditional CRT rear projection TV is formed by separate red, green, and blue projection "guns," these three guns have to be precisely aligned or "converged" for proper picture focus and color. TVs allow users to do this via the remote control, with digital and automatic multipoint digital convergence systems providing the most precise adjustment flexibility. Widescreen Captures the Feel of the Theater Many of the rear projection sets we sell are widescreen sets. Widescreen TVs simulate the movie theater experience and they're both appropriately sized at what's called 16:9. You may have also heard of this format referred to as letterbox on your videos and DVDs. This 16:9 expression means that the screen is significantly wider than it is tall. The advantage of 16:9 is that the screen dimensions mimic our field of vision, which is why viewing movies on widescreens feels so natural. By contrast, the shape of traditional TVs is expressed as 4:3, which means they're just a bit wider than they are tall. Today and for at least the next few years, TV programs will continue to be broadcast using the NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) standard, just as they have been since 1953. NTSC broadcasts are designed for 4:3 screens. Consequently, when such programming is broadcast to a 16:9 widescreen, black bars are displayed on the sides of the 16:9 TV screen so that the 4:3 picture is formatted as if it were on a 4:3 TV. Likewise, when letterbox DVDs and videos are shown on 4:3 TVs, black bars appear at the top and bottom of the screen to create the theater-quality 16:9 effect. If you read the owner's manual for any projection TV, it will clearly say that projection TVs are prone to something called "burn in." Burn-in occurs when a static image-such as the background for video games or even those black bars you see when watching 4:3 TV shows on a widescreen TV-is displayed for too long. This can cause a permanent "ghost" image of whatever it is that was burned in on the lenses inside the TV's tubes. You'll be fine as long as you vary the type of programming you watch. You bought the whole TV screen; you might as well use all of it. Advanced Technology TVs Rear projection TVs aren't limited to CRT models; there are a new bunch of flat-panel TVs that combine rear projection with LCD technology. The result? A lighter and brighter TV set sporting a very high cool factor: rear projection LCD TVs . If you're concerned about "burn-in" you may want to go the route of rear projection LCDs, as they're far less vulnerable to the burn-in effect. Also, rear projection LCD TVs don't require convergence or any special user setup like CRT rear projection TVs do. Many rear projection LCDs offer unique features, such as the ability to double as PC monitors, and the ability to display digital pictures from flash memory. Check to see which of these exciting features are available when shopping for rear projection LCD TVs. DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology comprises a micro-display panel no larger than a postage stamp. This small wonder is the genius behind a new, superior breed of rear projection TVs. DLP integrates anywhere from about 900,000 to up to 1.3 million microscopic mirrors to deliver astonishing, high definition detail, color and clarity in projection TVs. These tiny mirrors tilt to reflect the exact light and shading required to show amazingly vivid color on each of the screen's pixels. But before the light hits the pixels, it passes through a color wheel where the light is filtered into red, green, and blue light, from which at least 16.7 million colors are then displayed on the pixels-that's a range of colors eight times greater than what's found in analog projection sets. This crisp, vibrant picture quality is not the only benefit DLP rear projection TVs offer. Because of their design, DLP sets are light and feature a low profile, which allows you to place them in areas where CRT rear projection TVs simply wouldn't fit. For example, there will be DLP rear projection sets available weighing in at less than 70lbs., and measuring about 15 inches from front to back. Don't Get Left Behind! Go Digital If you're looking to purchase a projection TV, then you should know about HDTV because nearly all rear projection sets we sell are HDTV-capable. HDTV is the broadcast format of the future-and of the present. More and more stations have been upgrading from NTSC to 16:9 HDTV. HDTV broadcasts will be in 16:9 formatting. But what exactly are HDTVs? High-definition televisions are TVs that are able to display the incredible picture quality of high-definition programming, and also give you the best possible picture from sources such as DVD movies, digital satellite programming, and standard antenna or cable broadcasts. There are two types of high-definition televisions: 1. HDTV: Also known as high-definition TV. These have a built-in high-definition receiver that allows the TV to receive over-the-air high-definition broadcasts. These TVs require either an indoor or an outdoor antenna to receive high-definition over-the-air broadcasts (such as CBS or NBC). 2. HDTV Monitors: These are capable of displaying a high-definition TV signal, but require the separate purchase of a high-definition receiver and antenna to receive high-definition broadcasts. It may be a lot of information to digest, but there's only one thing you should remember: By upgrading to a rear projection TV, you can capture the magic, action, and drama of the movie If our store price is lower on the day you pick up your purchase, we will automatically adjust your purchase price to match the lower price. We cannot ship items outside of the USA due to manufacturer agreements.
