But when her prince is felled by an illness, Alanna has no choice but to use her healing magic--even if it means ruining her career From the Publisher Becoming a legend is not easy, as young Alanna of Trebond discovers when she disguises herself as a boy and begins training to be a knight. Alanna’s skills and stubborness help her befriend Prince Jonathan and alienate his evil uncle, Duke Roger. Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, this book is a rousing introduction to the intensely satisfying story of Alanna. About the Author In the sixth grade, Tamora Pierce was encouraged by her father to start writing and she immediately got hooked. Once she discovered fantasy and science fiction, she tried to write the same kind of stories she read, only with teenaged girl heroines who were usually missing from the 1960s stories. Before her junior year at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied psychology, Pierce rediscovered writing when she wrote her first original short story since tenth grade. She sold her first story a year later and then enrolled in a fiction writing course during her senior year. When her teacher suggested that she tackle a novel, her childhood ideas came back to her and she began her first sword and sorcery novel. Pierce then worked as a housemother in an Idaho group home for teenaged girls, who loved hearing Alanna’s story from the in-progress quartet, Song of the Lioness. As Pierce continued to write and send out manuscripts, she moved to Manhattan to get her publishing career off the ground. Pierce still lives in Manhattan with her husband, writer/filmmaker Tim, and their three cats, two parakeets, plus a floating population of rescued wildlife. She enjoys her hectic life as a full-time writer and she hopes that her books leave her readers with the feeling that they can achieve anything if they want it badly enough. Tamora Pierce is a popular author of fantasy books for teenagers. In her latest quartet, Protector of the Small, readers follow heroine Kel as she rigorously trains for the knighthood. Review Quotes "A lively, fascinating tale."-- Booklist Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 19 1. female heroes Reviewer: liat from ottawa, ont. Date: 8/27/2002 9:09:58 AM I recommend all of Tamora Pierce’s books. They are excellent. My favorite part is the fact that they all have female heroes. The plot is wonderful, it really is very nice not to read a book where the girl does nothing but moan the whole book… If you like female heroes (and even if you don’t) you will like this book (and all of Tamora Pierce’s work). 2. THE BEST Reviewer: Emily from Ontario/Canada Date: 7/22/2002 12:45:11 PM I first read her other series, Circle of Magic and I loved them. I read them over and over again and they never got boring. When I heard Tamora Pierce wrote other books I just had to read them! I'm glad I did because this book is full of adventure and fun, I couldn't put it down! This is a must have book, you have to read it or you won't know what you're missing! 3. alannas adventures Reviewer: Lizabeth from surrey, bc (queen_of_the_mousepad@hotmail.com) Date: 3/5/2001 12:15:56 AM These books are the most amazing things i've ever read, and this review is for all of the books in the alanna series, i can't pick just one. You'd think that after reading them once or twice youd get sick of them, but no. Every single word, the suspence builds and the story unfolds. You tear through the book, unable to put it down. This is the best writing i've ever read, and each time, the story is just as exciting, even maybe more so than the time before. Tamora Pierce has created, in my opinon, the greatest story of a girl and her travels that has ever been seen. The story of this girl whos grows into a woman is something that everyone can relate to, and every page turned, you learn, with alanna, about love, pain, trust, hate, magic, and most of all, how you can't be anyone other than yourself. Thank you to Tamora Pierce, for creating this unbelievable and inspiring series of amazing novels. 4. Sprightly and alive Reviewer: Elizabeth Garrison from Morinville, AB (alannaofpirates_swoop@hotmail.com) Date: 2/19/2001 4:51:09 PM This is a book which has started a tremendous following from all over the world-and for good reason. Alanna and her friends come alive so much you feel you could almost touch them. A definite reccomended read. 5. U Have 2 Read This!!! Reviewer: calla turnbull from Kingston/Ontario (blue_princess123@hotmail.com) Date: 2/6/2001 8:53:39 PM This is the best book ever! If you like fantasy/adventure/you'll-never-guess-what-happens-next books you have to read it. Tamora Pierce is a great author who has written lots of books, but the Lioness series rocks!!! The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
