The Bridge on the River Kwai begins with British prisoners, led by Col. Nicholson (Guinness) filing into a Japanese PoW camp. The harsh camp commandant Col. Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) wants the British to build a bridge, but Nicholson refuses until his captor will agree to certain conditions. Thus begins the extraordinary contest of wills that sustains the entire movie. Both men resist each other on principle, yet share the dream of building the bridge. In both cases, the construction is a measure of their extraordinary folly. Magnificent performances and a gripping plot make this Oscar-winning film a must-see. This DVD edition contains theatrical trailers and talent files for David Lean, Alec Guinness, William Holden, Jack Hawkins and Sessue Hayakawa. Notes The Columbia TriStar special edition video #80713 is part of a limited edition Academy Awards sell through package that comes with a free copy of "Oscar's Greatest Moments," a classic collection of some of the most memorable moments from Oscar telecasts. Additional cast: Peter Williams (Captain Reeves); John Boxer (Major Hughes); Ann Sears (Nurse); Henry Okawa (Captain Kanematsu). Description An outstanding, psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1952 novel. A classic story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American intelligence officers conspire to blow up the structure, but the commander (Guinness) who supervised the bridge's construction has acquired a sense of pride in his creation and tries to foil their plans. Too late, he realizes the devastating consequences of his actions. Although credited to screenwriter Carl Foreman, the script was actually written by blacklisted writer Michael Wilson. The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
