( Details ) Edition Details : 5 Hours 4 Cassettes | ISBN: 0807261726 Published: October 2000 | Published by Listening Library From the Publisher Approx. 5 hours, 4 cassettes Becoming a legend is not easy, as young Alanna of Trebond discovers when she disguises herself as a boy and begins training to be a knight. Alanna’s skills and stubbornness help her befriend Prince Jonathan but alienate his evil uncle, Duke Roger. Filled with swords and sorcery, adventure and intrigue, good and evil, this book is a rousing introduction to the intensely satisfying story of Alanna. About the Author In the sixth grade, Tamora Pierce was encouraged by her father to start writing and she immediately got hooked. Once she discovered fantasy and science fiction, she tried to write the same kind of stories she read, only with teenaged girl heroines who were usually missing from the 1960s stories. Before her junior year at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied psychology, Pierce rediscovered writing when she wrote her first original short story since tenth grade. She sold her first story a year later and then enrolled in a fiction writing course during her senior year. When her teacher suggested that she tackle a novel, her childhood ideas came back to her and she began her first sword and sorcery novel. Pierce then worked as a housemother in an Idaho group home for teenaged girls, who loved hearing Alanna’s story from the in-progress quartet, Song of the Lioness. As Pierce continued to write and send out manuscripts, she moved to Manhattan to get her publishing career off the ground. Pierce still lives in Manhattan with her husband, writer/filmmaker Tim, and their three cats, two parakeets, plus a floating population of rescued wildlife. She enjoys her hectic life as a full-time writer and she hopes that her books leave her readers with the feeling that they can achieve anything if they want it badly enough. Tamora Pierce is a popular author of fantasy books for teenagers. In her latest quartet, Protector of the Small, readers follow heroine Kel as she rigorously trains for the knighthood. Review Quotes "A lively, fascinating tale."-- Booklist From the Audio Cassette (Unabridged) edition. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 4 1. DON 'T miss this book!!!! Reviewer: Alison from Stittsville/Ottawa/Ontario (cutest_fairy_princess_2002@yahoo,ca) Date: 1/31/2002 1:45:55 PM This book is the best book I have ever read! Mrs. Pierce has done it again! This is the second series I've read by her (I read the Circle of Magic first; that one's great too, read it) and I knew I would be good, but wow! Anyway, I reccommend this book to anyone who likes a good Fantasy or Sci Fi, even though I don't think this is sci fi. 2. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alanna:The first adventure Reviewer: Madeleine from Quebec Date: 4/29/2001 11:48:09 AM The book is excellent. From the first page to the last your eyes cannot leave the text. Alanna is brilliant and her friends are too. I stayed up all night reading it. It's the kind of book you can't wait to know what happens next but when you finish you wish you were still reading it. Its a definite thumbs up! 4. The Magical Time of Knights Reviewer: Caitlin Hepnner from Sudbury Ontario Date: 1/20/2001 1:18:28 PM This is excellent young adults literature, it is what most want to do, have an adventure that will be in history forever. It keeps you on your toes and reading into the night. When she and her brother switch places you know she will be discovered by some friends and enemies. She finds love and comfort from the heir and his circle of friends. Mean while befriending a rogue. She makes enemies and saves lives. It is an excellent series starter. I am positive every teenager who reads fantasy will love this book almost as much as I did! Amazon Canada - Always the best prices!

The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
