(1999) Book ~ Kathryn Lasky From the Publisher Journey centuries back to the West African City of Angola, where Portuguese slave traders are beginning to invade the land. Readers meet Nzingha, daughter of the powerful King Kiluanji. Although she is but a young girl, Nzingha may have the wisdom to help her father and lead a troubled nation. First Month of Mbangala The Season When the Grass is Burned So here I am in the garden writing... If these words have magic, then I will use them to plot and plan a way to drive the Portugues from our land. And maybe one day my pages will tell others that I, Nzingha, first daughter of Kiluanji, was a Mbundu, a powerful people, who are free and unafraid to fight for our homeland of Ndongo in the Kwanza River Valley. Later that same evening My sisters have found me. Kifunji cannot resist teasing. She gives a big laugh. "Writing is good for you, sister. To see you sitting quietly is such a rare pleasure. Isn't it better than hurling a spear, or wrestling some boy to the ground?"... I am accused of being independent. It is true, I suppose. For I would rather be kept in an open basket instead of a lukata -- a box. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 2 1. Nzingha Rocks! Reviewer: Bimbo McDufus from Giggly Town (Blah Blah) Date: 2/12/2003 9:27:28 AM Nzingha is an extremely good book. The only problem is that it is a bit short. I finished it in 30 mins.I love the story! 2. Nzingha Reviewer: Jocelyn Lau from Richmond Hill Ontario (jocepop@hotmail.com) Date: 3/9/2001 1:52:48 PM This is a real page turner! I love the fact that there was a time when Nzingha asked to sit on a servant so that she could speak to the Portugeuse governor! The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
