At the outbreak of the First World War, they are swept up in the patriotic spirit and decide to enlist in the Bundeswehr. But as they fall deeper and deeper into the trenches, laying witness to excessive carnage and brutality, their feelings begin to fade. It seems tragedy is inevitable as the boys-now-men become all too disillusioned with reality. Made in 1930, All Quiet on the Western Front set a standard for depth that has rarely been matched since its making. Notes "All Quiet on the Western Front" received much attention for being one of the largest scale talkies to date (1930). It cost Universal $1.2 million to make. Copyright 1930 Universal Pictures Corporation. Renewed 1958 Universal Pictures Company. Rated BBFC PG by the British Board of Film Classification. Description Based on Erich Maria Remarque's timeless anti-war novel, this moving film follows a group of German recruits during World War I as they make their personal journey from patriotism to disillusionment. Shot on an epic scale with an impressive budget of $1.25 million, the film's realism and visual art created a sensation. Author (and war veteran) Remarque was forced by the reaction to the film to relocate from his native Germany to the United States. The recently restored version includes the entire "Last Supper" sequence and removes the annoying music added to later releases. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Writing. Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director. Synopsis A group of German schoolboys, inspired by their professor to fight for their country, enlist in World War I. The film documents their descent into war in graphic detail, from the everyday reality of trench warfare to starvation and butchery. The film tracks the boys in training, battle, and eventually their untimely deaths. The Seattle Times, August 03, 2002: Toronto - Indigo Books & Music and a group representing Canada's independent booksellers said they will challenge in court a government decision letting Amazon.com set up a Canadian Web site. Indigo, Canada's largest book chain, and the Canadian Booksellers Association said Amazon.com has violated rules that bar non-Canadians from controlling bookstores. Seattle-based Amazon.com is paying Assured Logistics, a unit of government-owned Canada Post, to run a Toronto-area warehouse and deliver books, music and movies ordered through the month-old Canadian site, Amazon.ca. That way, Amazon doesn't operate a bookstore in Canada. "The Heritage Department has confirmed Amazon.ca is operating in accordance with Canadian laws," said company spokeswoman Kristin Schaefer.
