Tick borne encephalitis is prevalent in the forests of Europe and Scandinavia. The vaccine is recommended for those who will be walking or camping in such areas. Hepatitis B is endemic in many tropical countries and transmitted by sexual activity and contaminated needles and syringes. Long stay travellers and those at particular risk (i.e. health workers) should consider this vaccine. Japanese encephalitis is transmitted by mosquitoes in certain rural parts of Southeast Asia. A vaccine is available for those going to risk areas for periods of a month or more. Rabies occurs in Europe, North America and many less developed countries. The rabies vaccine is only recommended for those who may be working with animals or staying more than 24 hours away from medical help. The immunisation does not guarantee complete protection, however, and medical advice must be sought if bitten. As a UK resident you've probably already had the Tuberculosis vaccine. However, if you've not been immunised and are staying for longer than a month in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Central or South America you'll may need it. Meningococcal meningitis is prevalent in some areas of Asia and Africa and a vaccine is available on request.
