Found yourself hankering for simple rural ways down on your own family farm? Well, we know that we have. So we've created our own little bit of agricultural bliss right here at home. We've put the colours of the harvest behind our own front door. We created a rustic mix of shades: crops from the field, combined with wood from the forest and clay from the ground to enjoy. Just the environment to take us back to the simplicity of our roots. SUMMER STRAW We started with a glimpse of summer straw glistening gold in the sun. We've hung old-fashioned white anaglypta textured wallpaper as a base, adding two coats of pale yellow emulsion . This natural colour gives instant warmth to any inside space. In our hallway, it also serves to balance what might otherwise be a dense colour concentration of wood and tile. RATHER RUSTIC In keeping with muddy farmyard boots, we used easy-to-clean floor tiles in versatile russet. Keep these tiles well coated with protective polish for longevity. We also decided to add softening accents of coir matting by the door and a welcoming hand-woven rug further in. Rugs really are the quickest way to add extra colour and ease hard surfaces. FARMHOUSE FEEL The stairs provide an opportunity to bring the farm-feel up to the first floor. We stripped the wood back to its natural condition, exposing the real sheen of unpainted pine. To preserve this, we swept a quick-drying oak satin wood varnish over the surfaces. And to heighten interest here we added a modest round pine newel end piece to match the set of replaced pine spindles. It was finished with a hard-wearing provincial style runner for the whole length - a true stairway to the country! HOMELY TOUCHES Next, we've bought in the practical items that every working farm would have. Homely touches of the well-worn and well-loved are here in the honest open shelving and humble wicker umbrella stand. We searched for and used burnished brass hat rack hooks in a butterfly design. These were positioned right next to the door to help everyone come and go smoothly. Lastly, we added three charming animal oil prints in wooden frames as a feature at the foot of the stairs. A fourth print was hung in a bare spot above the shelving for added interest. The finishing touch to our 'Farmhouse' hallway - our passage to the good life!
