We have created the special feel of a rustic chalet nestling in a blanket of new snow. Just inhale that sweet smell of pine, spot the delicate Edelweiss flower, and hear the faint tinkle of cowbells from faraway pastures. This is unspoilt mountain village life at its best. We've transported a little piece of alpine heaven into our hallway design. SET THE SCENE The scene is set with a fresh sweep of light green matt paint on the walls. The pale shade reflects light inwards and ensures maximum luminosity. We carried the colour down to traditional pine wall- cladding : a key feature of a traditional chalet. To enliven the panels, we picked out a deeper shade of mint green to wash across the wood. Staining with a low-odour and quick-drying varnish is the best way to do this. Visually, cladding is usually best finished off with the clean line of a dado rail, such as the simple strip we attached above. WARMING TONES Wood is key in terms of the hall flooring. We've laid a hard-wearing, warm-toned ash wood laminate . The best wood shade is definitely ash, as its blond sheen is typically alpine. Ash is actually a wonderfully versatile shade in that it is easily compatible with the whole colour spectrum. You can also incorporate it into most interior design styles, from urban cool to Victorian and beyond. CHARMING BRASS For a clear but subtle hall light , we used a charming brass-effect twin uplight. This tucks superbly into our hall's corner section. Practically speaking, it's always helpful to place a light next to the door , for effortless access as you come and go. We've kept artificial hall lighting to a minimum, as the door's window panels will let in lots of natural daylight. MOUNTAIN DETAIL To fill our 'Alpine Morning' hallway with more mountain detail, we naturally chose blond pine furniture. An open pine-shelving unit provides all that necessary storage for family clutter, keys and bags. Keep it as tidy as possible to allow speed in the morning rush! Two chunky pine chests allow you to tuck larger and less attractive items away from view - great answers to everyday junk problems. Completing our alpine hall was easy. We scattered bright, light cushions and throws over the pine chests, creating comfy seating in an instant.
