The vivid blues and whites, combined with the beautiful rich hues of the solid wood flooring, may make you feel like striding about the room with a telescope in one hand and a gin and tonic in the other! CREATING SPACE A small room may seem closed in when the walls are painted or wallpapered in dark colours. However, you can avoid this problem by simply painting a wide white border between the ceiling and the top line of dark paint / wallpaper. This spacious effect can be seen despite the strong blue that we've used and there's even a border to enhance the look. The white skirting board, wall lights, curtains and even the picture frame also help to enhance the sense of space in this room. REFLECTIONS Perhaps the most striking feature in the room, and perhaps the first thing your eye is drawn to, is the polished wooden floor. It appears as if it's been there for years. In fact, this is simply laminated flooring that you can easily lay yourself. This classic flooring looks pretty in most rooms of the house, but especially here as the stylish fireplace gently reflects off the floor surface. This really gives a feeling of warmth, and softens the cool blue paint work. Because the floor is laminated, it is hardwearing and easy to keep clean too. ACCESSORISE IT Accessorising your room with feature items will help to reinforce the theme you are trying to create. To achieve the naval character of this room that gives it a 'captain's cabin' feel we used a combination of colour co-ordinated accessories, such as the sailboat on top of the fireplace, candlestick holder, brass fireguard and brass lamp, on the occasional table. NAUTICAL THEMES To complement the flooring and the overall effect of our 'Naval' living room, we've chosen natural pine furniture. The curved corner table by the fire, picture frame, curtain rod and the staggered shelf unit have all been finished in a warm tone. This polished wood adds to the comfortable, lived-in atmosphere of the room. FEELING COSY To finish off, the natural cotton sofa cover, cushions and the throw really add to the nautical theme. The lighting should ideally be subtle and situated in the corners of the room, like the table lamp we've featured here.
