Bored with the way things look and want to try something really different? Then why not transform it into a little bit of Victorian England with this elegant colonial lounge? We've taken an ordinary living room and with just a little imagination turned it into a room where you could entertain the vicar and his lady wife in comfort. We started with the walls and used B&Q Satinwood Soft Cream to give the room a hot and sunny afternoon feel. This colour lightens the room and also makes it feel larger and warmer. Using a light-coloured curtain fabric heightens the effect too. An abundance of natural light adds to the atmosphere of the room. Strengthen this effect by painting or leaving the ceiling white, creating an even more spacious feel. NIGHT GLOW For the lighting, we have used an Eastleigh Double Wall Light on either side of the fireplace to give a warm glow at night, as well as giving an authentic period feel to the room during the day. The two black-framed pictures above the fireplace break up the space there, as do the matching peace lilies in vases on the wooden mantelpiece. PRETTY PLANTS In fact, plants really make this room, so we put a large Kentia Palm in the corner and another smaller one on the small bookshelf opposite. We also put another wooden bookshelf unit in the corner and filled it with lots of knickknacks. All this wood not only really looks the part, but gives a relaxed and lived-in feel to the room as well. CHERRY FIRE Next came the fireplace, and for this we chose the Hilton Park Cherry Finish fireplace, as we wanted to continue the natural wood theme. There aren't any sharply contrasting colours here, as we're going for an overall effect of relaxation. This really does come across - particularly with the finishing touch of the fire burning away in the grate. The gas fire we've used looks great here! SOLID PINE The solid pine floor makes the room complete and brings all the colours together beautifully. It looks even better with a handcrafted Persian rug in a rich gold and red. The Elegant Empire living room look is ideal if you've collected lots of ornaments and books over the years, as you can fill it with as many bits and pieces as you like and it will only look better!
