Definitely a place to snuggle up in for the night. But because the paintwork here isn't too dark it's perfectly usable in the daytime, too. This strong colour scheme can be used in a smaller room to even greater effect as we are aiming for a sense of warmth and cosiness here, although it would look a little dark in the daytime unless there is plenty of natural light flooding in. BREAKING UP COLOUR It's always a good idea when painting a room with such rich colours to have as many points of a lighter colour. This breaks up the colour, ensuring that it does not become overpowering. So over the Chestnut Red matt paint we painted the picture rail and skirting board in cream. This relieves the red in quite a subtle, but effective, way (white would have been to harsh - and not very Victorian!). CHERRY FIREPLACE We carried on this theme by choosing the Hilton Park Cherry Finish fireplace and painting the area between the fire and the wood again with the cream. This highlights the colour of the wood beautifully and makes more of a feature of the fireplace itself. The brass lamp on the mantelpiece and the wall-mounted light again give a warm feel to the room and bring the colours to life. The rather regal gilt-framed mirror not only fits in with the rest of the furniture perfectly, but adds some much-needed light too. The pine shelf unit to the right of the fireplace is a little more modern, but still blends in with the feel of the room. This can be filled with pictures, vases, candles and old leather-bound books. BALANCING THE ROOM The two wooden shelves on the other side of the fireplace balance the room, and give you somewhere for all your bits and pieces, as does the wooden pine box below them. Talking of filling out, the Victorians loved to pack their rooms with plants - aspidistras especially - so by the fireside we've put our own bit of greenery! You could dot a few more around the room as the green works extremely well with the red and the cream. POLISHED FLOORS What really sets off this room is the richly polished wooden flooring in hardwearing laminate. This look is rather splendid at night with the fire burning. To complete this Victorian living room we put down a large rug in front of the settee, so at the end of the day you can stretch your feet out and relax.
