The inspiration for this exotic living room has come straight out of Africa. It may seem dramatic, but it is very easy to achieve. Although shown off best in large rooms, it also works well in open-plan areas. Used indoors, hot colours like burnt orange and deep reds mixed with vibrant blues will create the impression of sizzling temperature out of doors. To accentuate the feeling of warmth, keep decorative finishes matt - plain painted walls are the easiest option, whereas subtle colour washing and clouding paint effects or rough 'plaster' created with textured paint would also make a suitable backdrop. Don't be afraid to put a strong colour on a ceiling, especially if it is high - there is no hard and fast rule that says a ceiling must be white, and pale ochre would be much more authentic. TERACOTTA TILES A tiled ceramic floor provides a cool contrast to the colour scheme, and offers the perfect opportunity to introduce another design feature so typical of the region - mosaics! Muted terracotta field tiles form the backdrop for inset motif tiles with a rich blue pattern, which are also used to create a decorative border that frames the floor and fireplace. A mosaic tile effect stencilled in the same rich blue at dado level all around the room echoes the theme, and transforms an ordinary gold framed mirror into a feature that is much more exotic. ARCHITECTURE Richly coloured wood and natural stone also play a strong part in Moroccan architecture, provided here with a deep wooden architrave, wooden shelving and fire surround inset with a mock marble panel. Opt for freestanding shelving and if you want it to appear even more authentic, dress up the framework and shelf edges with substantial ornate wooden mouldings. Finish off with a coloured varnish in a rich woodshade. ETHNIC SCREENS To convince yourself that you are residing in hotter climes, disguise the view with wooden shutters or an ethnic-style screen. The real thing can be very expensive, whereas small louvre and lattice doors finished with a coloured varnish in rich walnut will do the job just as well. Finally add atmosphere with contrasting light and shadows created by glass lamps. Look for exotic shapes and glass in vibrant colours such as this stunning star shaped lantern and blue table lamps. Ethnic lamps in dull beaten metal are another good choice, or you could try your hand at transforming an old china lamp with hammered metal effect spray paint. THE FINAL TOUCH To accessorise this look, go for solid rustic looking wooden furniture in rich dark wood and pad out chairs with silky cushions in a variety of shapes. Add fringing and colourful beads to budget-buy cushions to make them more exotic, and throw in an ethnic rug for winter months. The final touch is lots of lush foliage - go for large, extravagant floor-standing plants in natural or colourful glazed terracotta pots.
