Even though it may be a little out of the ordinary, this room is actually as practical as it is comfortable, and with a real fire and warm natural fabrics around you this room lends itself to relaxation. SUNNY FEELINGS The room has been painted with a clean and cool sky blue giving an open, sunny day feeling. Anything darker would bring the room down too much, although a more orange hue would work well, depending on the amount of natural light within your room. We've added a little extra light with a wall-mounted uplighter and a couple of smaller lamps on the side table and shelf unit. EDGING THE ROOM To edge the room neatly, a darker fern green was chosen for the skirting board and window frame. Although you can't see it in this picture, we kept the ceiling white to retain the feeling of space and light (the mirror above the fireplace helps to do this, too). The small Dragon tree on the mantelpiece helps keep the ethnic feel and looks really good against the sky blue. FOCAL POINT FIRE Talking of mantelpieces, we chose a fireplace in a natural cherry finish to complement the mahogany-effect floor. Again, this flooring is made in a tough, hardwearing laminate. This will keep its good looks for years and complement the rest of the room perfectly. Even though we're going for an ethnic feel here, the coal-effect fire fits the look. It not only provides a focal point for the room but also gives another splash of colour and movement. NATURAL PINE We decided on natural pine units to go either side of the fire. They look good, and are perfect for filling with books, bowls, and vases - or anything else you have that will be in keeping with the theme of the room. We've put in an extra lamp as the corner was a little dark, but perhaps the best feature here is the larger pine unit that fits snugly into the far corner, and breaks up both walls neatly. To round things off, we put a large maroon Mandalay Jute rug in the middle, (perfect for snuggling up on in front of the fire!) and a bamboo blind for the window.
