A room you can feel comfortable in and one that is reminiscent of years gone by. DEEP REDS We applied two coats of deep chestnut-red matt paint to the walls. This warm, rich colour was then complemented with the use of a light cream matt paint applied to the skirting and the inner window frame. PERSIAN PILE We chose oak effect laminate flooring emphasising the warm tones of the room. To really accentuate the golden hues of the oak, we laid a handcrafted square woven Persian rug on top, in a luxurious palette of autumnal colours. ENHANCING THE LOOK To further enhance the look, we have carefully chosen different lighting effects. The main floor light is an antique-look free-standing brass uplighter, which provides a good general spread of light across the room. The antique-look brass picture light has been used to highlight fashionable prints on the wall and partners the brass uplighter well. For a strong reading light we have used a smart brass Regency table lamp . Having completed the backdrop to our library, we then turned our attention to furnishing it. A solid oak desk acts as the room's focal point, a practical and stately reminder of the bygone era. Ours is the genuine thing, but you can invest in a good alternative in most second-hand and antique shops. Set back in the quiet corner is our antique leather wingback-reading chair, and the all-important leather volumes sit on simple dark pine shelves . PARADISE PALM To finish, we included some popular house plants. We have added a full-grown Paradise Palm at the arm of our reading chair, and a smaller Spathiaphyllum to the shelving.
