In a multi-purpose room, think of the flooring first - it will need to cope with several activities and still look good. There are foolproof kits available for all the basic distressed paint techniques, but simple blocks of colour can be just as effective and are very easy to achieve CREATE DEPTH Here two or three shades of the main wall paint colour have been used for contemporary blocks of colour that echo the shape of the window on an adjoining wall. This creates visual interest and adds depth to the room with 'windows' of light and dark. All that's needed for this is a roll of low-tack masking tape, a spirit level and a straight rule, but make sure that the base colour is thoroughly dry before attempting the cubes of colour.
