The essence of Italian style is subtle contrasts created by highly ornate frescoes and vibrant stained glass. ANTIQUE WHITE A floor of antique white ceramic tiles really looks the part, and a border panel of patterned motif tiles turns it into a very stylish feature. Doing this adds to the highly ornate look, and echos the pattern of the motif tiles used on the floor. Next turn your attention to the ceiling. Install deep coving , and add depth and embellishment by fixing strips of ornate wooden mouldings along the lower edge. Don't be tempted to simply use the pre-patterned coving available - these are either period English designs or have a typically Grecian flavour that would be quite out of place here. To instantly antique plasterwork, brush on a ready-mixed glaze and immediately wipe it off with a cloth - this leaves traces of colour in crevices that imitates the patina of age: a stone-coloured glaze is the most subtle, while earthy terracotta creates a slightly warmer contrast. WITH A VENETIAN FEEL Keep accessories to a minimum - this is a style that requires very little fuss. A front door with stained glass panels has a very Venetian feel, while a chair in contemporary style ironwork, a picture or two with matt black frames , and elegant stone urns is all that's required to complete the look.
